Personal, Cultural, Structural Change
I’ve had a theory for a while now that personal, cultural, and structural change are like three strands of a braid woven around each other.
There’s a few layers here- our personal healing affects the cultural change that is possible, and structural change doesn’t happen without those shifts.
We need songs for all three layers: personal, cultural, and structural change. I’m trying to catch, and write, songs that serve the braided whole.
My songs are explicitly designed to be sung in community settings, by the community, for the community, and to anchor our courage as we work for a new world together.
My songs are written for participation, not performance: my practice lives and breathes by who shows up to sing together.
My songs have been sung in the streets, at protests and picket lines, at parties and potlucks, at teach-ins and farmers’ markets, at backyard birthdays and bonfires down by the river.
My songleading is part of the ancient oral tradition of call and echo teaching, where the goal of singing together is joy, grief, connection, and changed hearts and minds.
